Grrrr! As much as I dislike Palin's political beliefs and her style, I am even more annoyed that the media seems to think that the purpose of a female running mate is to sway women. First, it implies that these women only care about gender, not about policies. Second, it reinforces the tired myth that women's issues are just for women by implying that only women care about a woman eventually being president or vice president.

I fear you may think of me as some sexist male, or dirty liberal or something of that vein but I agree with the press to a certain extent. To me, it is understood that they mean McCain's purpose for picking a female running mate was to sway women. Palin talks her talk and walks...well some of her talk at least just like any other politician who has policies and wants to see them implemented. However, she she is a Republican. Even their advisers admit that they are running a campaign based on values and not on issues. In this instance it is more important to her own party that she is a woman and not important that she is for drilling in Alaska for oil, teaching Intelligent design, teaching abstinence only programs, etc.

Oh, I agree that the Republicans probably find her important because she is a woman, but that does not mean that the media has to run with that story. In my (admittedly idealized) opinion, the media covered that angle sufficiently awhile ago and should move on to more substantial things by now.

I could turn this into a rant on responsible journalism, but this is not my blog =)

Let me just say that I can see why they are doing it, but I agree with your opinion that the should be covering something else.

I was just responding to the part where you said the media 'seems to think that the purpose of a female running mate is to sway women.' I guess I should have been clearer. The media isn't thinking beyond 'what will the people watch', or for some stations/reporters 'what do the Republicans want me to report'. The media in general don't care about Palin's purpose, only what people want to hear, or what some people want heard.

And that is what is so darn frustrating about it.

While she is refusing to speak with the media for two weeks, she has enough time to pose for Vogue.
